Once everyone had arrived, the group would set off. The facility had been built a distance away from any pre-war settlement, so it would be a long walk of probably about an hour.

As the group trotted on, there would be very few signs of life. The most that could really be seen was a radhog in the distance every now and then, as well as the occasional root of Xander. For once, the wastes actually seemed...quiet. However, this really just made the long walk seem even longer. Surely there had to be something to do to pass the time?

Zestari didn’t mind long walks. She’d done plenty of travelling before and usually by herself. As they set off, she felt wonderful; it was good to feel like she was actually doing something, even minor, instead of cloistering herself away to create more alchemical poultices.

Indeed, all the journey with others meant was she had an audience – a somewhat captive audience - so throughout the trek she made it her personal mission to pretty much never stop talking. If it wasn’t the weather, it was the landscape. If it wasn’t stories, then it was anecdotes, and if it wasn’t idle gossip, then it was important medical information. It didn’t even bother her when the others just plodded on in lengthy silence at her. That just meant they were intently listening, of course.

Truly, Zestari was practically overjoyed at the peaceful journey, punctuated just often enough by wayward wildlife or plants to keep her mind occupied.

Bakewell was more than happy to listen to Zestari’s constant chatting. The mare smiled at happy stories, frowned at the sad ones, listened eagerly to the gossip, and tried not to daze out too badly from all the medical mumbo jumbo that the mare had little to no hope of understanding. The earth pony was thrilled to listen, and would probably have been content to sit there and talk to Zestari for ages were it not for the presence of the other two ponies. She had to get them involved. Had to make sure they didn’t feel left out and annoyed by the chatter.

But that’s where the mare hit a problem. Her knowledge of the two companions wasn’t exactly a complete collection. What would they want to talk about? Maybe if she stuck with something related to the mission…

“Wow, Zestari. Oatmeal? That’s crazy!” Bakewell chuckled, trying to grab the conversation before a new series of words started. “So hey, ponies. We’re about to face robots, right? I don’t know much about those things. Anypony got any useful advice about them? Any notable stories involving them?” She asked, looking from face to face. “I mean, I’ve got a little robot vacuum-y thing, but that’s about as far as my experience with them goes.”

Ashen was silent for much of the walk, the sound of Zestari talking on and on not particularly bothering the unicorn. He wasn't exactly one to get annoyed easily, and for the post part he could push the chatter to the back of his mind as he formulated plans for dealing with the robots once they reached the factory, having extensive experience with them. He was mentally going over possible tactics and strategies when he heard what Bakewell mention robots.

“So hey, ponies. We’re about to face robots, right? I don’t know much about those things. Anypony got any useful advice about them? Any notable stories involving them?” she had asked.

Ashen glanced over at the mare behind his goggles, and for the first time on the trek he spoke.

"Considering that the robots are apparently a part of the factory's defense systems, there should we a way to shut them down from the inside, via a terminal. The robots would either all be connected to a central computer of some kind that would control all the defense systems, or separate nodes scattered around the facility, depending on how the system was designed. Either way, there should be a way to remotely shut them down. If there's not, then destroying the robots will suffice, although it will be significantly more difficult." explained Ashen, all in his traditional flat, emotionless voice.

"As for directly fighting the robots, I would recommend aiming for their targeting sensors if they're are multiple robots, the 'eyes' on a Mr. Gutsy or Handy for instance. This will cause the robot to start wildly firing shots, potentially taking out other robots, while also marking itself as a hostile to them. Although if we encounter any Sentry Robots they will be less vulnerable to that tactic, due to having a significant amount of armoring on their head casing, sensor included. Otherwise you will want to aim for unarmored areas, heat dispersal vents, exposed wiring, joints, anything that doesn't look like it has protection. A robot will not feel pain, and the armor on a military-grade one will protect it sufficiently, the only way to destroy one is to cause enough damage to its internals, disable it's method of movement, or hit something critical like the power supply."

While Mona would have seemed silent for most of the trip, the constant yammering of her two more sociable companions was starting to get a bit grating...not that she minded them talking, but Mona was never one to trust the wastes when they were quiet, and she had spent a good bit of the trip looking out for any potential threats that could be trying to sneak up on them.

However, when Bakewell started asking about the robots, and Ashen suddenly spoke up to explain them, she did find herself becoming a bit more interested, as she listened to his explanation. He clearly knew what he was talking about.

"It sounds to me like you have quite a lot of experience with such machines."

She stated, giving Ashen a glance before returning to watching out for trouble.

Most of what Ashen said completely went over Bakewell’s head and his voice’s boring old schoolteacher-esque monotone certainly didn’t help her mind focus on the mishmash of terms. She briefly wondered why and how Ashen and Mona managed to keep their voices so… flat. Bakewell was pretty sure she wouldn’t be able to keep her voice that even if she tried! Technicalities aside, the mare was pretty sure that she had gotten the basics down, though. The robots were kinda like puppets with one big fancy science thing controlling them that they could use to shut them all down. Go for the robots’ eyes (What did robots even need eyes for?) and any area that didn’t look like it was super-protected.

“Yeah, What Mona said.” Bakewell agreed. “I guess you wear the goggles for protection when working with bots and stuff. You should take them off sometimes though, They look ug- err, make you look silly. It can’t be healthy for your eyes to have those tight things on all the time anyway. I’ve never seen you without them on!”

Granted, Bakewell had only actually seen Ashen like twice since the stable massacre. But he had been wearing them both times nonstop!

Ashen glanced at Mona. "Yes, I have extensive experience with robotics of many types, largely due to practical experience with various defunct robots in several other factories I've visited, most of them empty with one exception." he explained.

He turned to Bakewell, and when the mare mentioned that his goggles were 'Silly', and another word that the mare didn't finish, Ashen's entire body stiffened. For the briefest of moments his lips curled, his teeth barred, and his goggle-covered eyes, looking directly at Bakewell, narrowed in an armor-piercing glare. But it only lasted for the briefest of moments, before he was back to his normal, completely emotionless self.

"Your concern is noted." he simply said, before going back to his silence.

“Exactly, Bakewell!” Zestari chuckled before looking at the others as conversation turned towards the foes the group was likely to come up against in the near future.

Zestari had fought robots before, although it was only briefly. Most of what Ashen described was vaguely familiar, and she could remember a terminal that deactivated the mechanical foes last time, too. So she nodded, remaining unexpectedly quietly. When Ashen began to talk about types of robot, she was simply puzzled. She didn’t know one type of robot from another. A Mr Gutsy this, or a Mr Handy that. She just listened to the basics. Aim for the weak parts.

Zestari titled her head at Bakewell as she mentioned Ashen’s headwear, and she smiled at Bakewell. Travelling with the mare was fun; she wished she journeyed with her housemate more often! Moving her focus back to the headwear, it was a good point, Zestari had never really thought much of the goggles, they seemed no more odd than wearing a hat, or other garment. But she never saw Ashen without them. His response was hardly insightful, and Zestari sighed.

“How much further until we get there, Mona?”

Mona would notice the slight responce to Bakewell's question by Ashen. From personal experience, Mona knew that usually it took some...well...extreme emotional responces to breach her own monotone, so to see Ashen's show of slight emotion at Bakewell's comment on his goggles stuck out for her.

They must be important for some reason. I should probably remember that...

However, Mona didn't get a chance to dwell on this for too long, as Zes asked her how long it would take untill they got to the facility. Mona was about to respond by saying she didn't know, but as they walked, a two-story building would start to come into view. Possibly the facility?

"Possibly not much longer, it would seem."

As the group approached the facility, certain details would become immediatly apparant.

While the building was damaged, like nearly all pre-war constructions. It still seemed to be in fairly good condition. As such, there was only two real ways inside that could be seen. There was a main entrance which was probably how any workers had come in and out...but there also looked to be a bay door around the left, which might be able to be forced open with some strength.

How the party decided to enter would be up to them.

Bakewell’s head drooped to look at the ground and her ears splayed back in response to Ashen’s glare. She didn’t have the personal experiences to realize it, but the mare felt a lot like a little filly who had accidently done something terrible, and was now facing the wrath of a vengeful adult. She thought about apologizing for accidently offending him so, but decided that the better apology would be to simply shut up for the rest of the short trip.

Once the group had actually reached the building she removed her self inflicted punishment.

“Hey.” She asked carefully after seeing the bay door around the lefthoof side and pushing upwards slightly upon metal to get a feel for the thing.

“I might be able to get this open, if you want.” She offered. Her question was towards the whole group, but her gaze and focus was on Mona. “Would that be a good idea? I don’t know how these places are really set up. Do you think it would trigger a whole slew of alarms or anything?”

Mona would examine the Bay door as they approached. She could see some benefits to either way, but a lot of it was speculation.

"...Trash said he set off a security protocol. So I suppose it would depend. I expect we could run into resistance either way..."

She would state, as she pondered which way to go.

"It looks like the room could be larger, so if there's any robots inside this room, it could be larger in number. However, the entrance could be safer...or more dangerous...it would depend on the level of security here."

Like a blessing from the ancestors, as Zestari asked about their destination, on the horizon the squat building made its presence known, and Zestari gave a quiet cheer.

Arriving at the building, Zestari stood to the side as Bakewell and Mona examined the bay door. She wasn’t really much of an expert on doors and enemies, and so instead she spent more time examining the outside walls of the structure, trying to get a better understanding of how the building might be laid out.

“We could always try the main entrance,” she pointed towards it with a hoof, “Would that be more guarded or less?” She looked puzzled, would they defend the main entrance heavier or lighter with the expectation that staff would also be present to defend normally?

“Regardless we should find some cover in case the robots are more dangerous than we were told. Our safety is important.”

Ashen was silent as he looked between the two possible entrances, analyzing the possibilities and risks.

"In my experience, the front entrance doesn't usually have a particularly heavy security system, and when it does wear and time typically render it inoperable. However, considering that 'Trash' did trigger a security system of some type, so relying on that assumption would not be wise. Furthermore, my own experiences may not match what's inside, it would help if we could figure who the manufacturer who operated the factory was, although I see no overt signs on the building itself." he explained in his flat voice.

"As for the bay door, there is most likely a basic security system cover, however whether it would be activated or even operational I can not say. And as Mona said, there would be more room for robots inside...However, there is a way to check before we decide on a course of action..."

Ashen held up his left foreleg, and flipped on the EFS system on his pipbuck. "I'd suggest you'd check the main entrance as well using your own Eyes Forward Sparkle." he suggested to Bakewell before walking over to the bay door.

As he approached, he did a thorough scan of the door, scanning it from from multiple angles to ensure that any red enemy blips he picks up are in the room on the other side of the bay door, and not further in the facility.

    [Check Bay Door with EFS]

(I'm assuming that Bakewell is the only one with a pipbuck besides Ashen, if I'm wrong please yell at me so that I can edit my post appropriately.)

So the front door would be guarded, but possibly less so? Was that the basic idea? Geeze, Ashen Coat sure used a lot of complicated words for so simple an idea. Still, he had a good idea…

“Okay.” Bakewell told him, moving to the front entrance as suggested by his advice and checking her own EFS before and trying to look for any red bars showing on the other side of the main doorway. She had forgotten that her pipbuck even had the feature due to becoming so used to the thing always being in her vision. It had never even occurred to the mare that she could use it to find hostiles in other rooms.

The results would be less then positive for the two ponies checking their EFS's to determine enemy location.

Ashen's scan of the bay door would come up with nothing, however, this could have been the iron bay door itself interfering with his signal...

Bakewell's, on the other hand, would prove slightly more interesting, as two stationary red pips would appear on her EFS when she checked the main entrance.

    "Hmm..."

Ashen was suspicious of the reading, he had expected to find at least a few blips. He raised a hoof and banged it on the door, it felt very hard and thick.

'That could be disrupting the signal, if it's thick enough...'

Ashen returned to the others, EFS still over his eyes. "My EFS is reporting nothing in the room beyond the bay doors, however, I believe the iron door may be disrupting the signal. If Bakewell can open the door just a crack I may be able to get a more clearer picture without putting any of us in significant danger. However, if her own findings are more favorable it would be logical to simply go through the front door instead." he explained, before turning to the entrance and awaiting Bakewell's return.

Bakewell rejoined the group after checking her eyes forward sparkle.

“There’s two reds behind the front door. They aren’t moving, if that means anything to anypony. It’s probably nothing too major.” She reported with a brief shrug. “I mean, what kind of robot can’t move? You’d just be able to walk around it or something.”

She turned her gaze to the side with the bay doors as she waited for orders or ideas.

“You know…” The mare mused to herself absentmindedly. “I’m going to feel awfully silly if we put all this work in and it turns out I can’t actually get the thing open.”

As Mona watched the two Stable Dwellers do...something with those Pipbucks of theirs, she couldn't help but feel a little frustrated. This was a very open area of land that they were hanging around in, aside from the building, and it didn't seem smart to stand around for too much longer, lest they be found by less then friendly eyes.

"If you two have an idea of what's on the other side, then make up your minds quick. We should try and get inside before we attract any attention. The wastes have been far, far too quiet, and that usually dosn't mean anything good, if the track record I've seen means anything."

When Bakewell and Ashen started waving their amazing pipbucks around, trying to work out what was within the building, Zestari was struck once again by a pang of jealousy at the hoof mounted piece of ingenuity. Such amazing and capable devices and she still didn’t have one. So while they scanned doorways and talked about red colours and such, Zestari sort of stood there almost bored. She didn’t know much about tactics – the amount she did know, she’d already mentioned – and nor did she really know about the robots within, so couldn’t provide guidance there.

Instead she occupied herself with re-checking her medical supplies and giving the occasional glance towards the others. When Mona mentioned how concerned she was with the silence, Zestari flicked her ears about. It was quiet, but that didn’t really mean anything, did it? She shrugged and went back to checking things, while the others determined a point of entrance.

Bakewell brought her gaze back to the group. Mona’s tone was the same as always, but something about the word choice struck the beige mare poorly. This, combined with Zestari’s bored supply checking, made Bakewell want to just take the easy option and be done with it. What would her teammates think of her think if she and Ashen went through all this trouble and wasted so much time only for her to not be powerful enough to open the doors anyway? The others would blame Bakewell and be angry at her. The group wouldn’t be any better off for the time wasted. The mare suddenly found herself unwilling to face that kind of embarrassment.

“Let’s just take the front; it’s only two unmoving enemies so how hard can it be? Hay, you unicorns could probably just levitate your weapons around the door-frame and shoot them, right? Besides, Trash got out fine after tripping the stuff, so we should be fine as well.” She said, moving back to the front door and waiting for the others.

The group would approach the front entrance, with Mona taking the lead. However, the second she shoved open the front door, several shots rang out, as bullets whizzed past the group through the entranc, several just barely missing Mona as she ducked back behind the doorframe for cover.

It would appear the two 'stationary' enemies were actually ceiling-mounted turrets!

    'Turrets. As I expected.'

Ashen pressed himself against the opposite side of the doorframe from Mona, already unholstering his Bolt Rifle. "I'll target the left turret." He informed his teammates before he peaked around cover and aimed the rifle at the first turret, centering it in his sights. He squeezed the trigger twice, the magically-filled particle bolts whizzing through the air towards their target.

Bakewell skirted back as bullets shot through the open doorway, taking a moment to steel herself before the cook lowered head and charged full speed through the open doorway, rushing towards the second turret. She tried to keep Ashen’s earlier advice and target the weak places, but as she launched a barrage of hoofblows against the machine she found that she was mostly just hitting wherever she could and hoping for the best.

Narrowly evading the cascade of bullets from the turret, Mona quickly readied her 10mm Pistol, as she pressed herself back against the doorframe, feeling the impact of the bullets against the wood of her cover.

She didn't give the shots the chance to get past the barrier and into her armour though, as she quickly poked around the corner and fired four shots in the direction of the turret that was currently firing, hoping to disable it before it could pose any risk to her or her companions.
