"The Khans have a few contingencies for this." Kick Start answered, taking a post next to the doorway. "Most likely we're going to fall back to Red Rock, it's just about the only place we can have a chance in hell to defend after all these losses. How's Trails doing?"

The answer to Start's question was without a doubt not good. The stallion had been shot several times in the chest and shoulder before having a grenade give him an impromptu lesson in physics and butchery. Honestly the fact he was still alive was in itself a small miracle. Even with a skilled medic like Zestari there he'd be laid out for a long time. Still she'd stopped the bleeding, and for the moment, he was stable.

Kes nodded and went back to holding his side together. Red Rock, that was...west of here if he remembered. Good trek too, but if it got them out of the cross fire so be it.

A long hike never hurt anyone.

To pass the time Kestrel took to watching Zestari as she worked on Trails. He'd never been good with medicine and was still learning all he could about natural remedies and survival skills. If he'd been in Zestari's position, even with Trails being a friend, he would have just done what he could to make Trails comfortable. No way he knew what to do to fix the grievous wounds.

Checking over Happy’s injuries, Zestari ran a hoof through her mane, trying to work out just where to start post-stabilising the buck. If she didn’t know better she’d have thought he had a death wish or something.

It didn’t help that she felt woefully underprepared. It was true she had a saddlebag full of plants and herbs, but in this unprepared state they were aromatic keepsakes at best. Still she had a few items towards the bottom, and enough normal equipment that given time she could get him back on his hooves. But was that the best option?

She looked up to the others. ”How urgent do we need to move. He is stable now. , I can quickly help stitch Kestrel, and If we can put together a makeshift stretcher Happy should be okay to move and we can operate when the situation is better. Or I can work here, but we may be at risk."

    “What should we do?”

Trails rose from his bloody pool and staggered weakly towards the door. “What should we do?” Soon as he heard the question raised the answer came to him. He grabbed the service rifle from the ground and limped past his friends.

Zestari actually had to stifle a surprised laugh, and quickly ran in front of Happy. “No you’re not, you’re in no condition to fight you foolish buck.” With martial finesse, she snatched the rifle in her hooves, and tossed it towards Kestrel. “You’re going to either lie back down so I can operate, or lie down on a stretcher that we’ll cobble together. I’m not going to have my medical supplies and effort wasted on the foolish notion that you think you can do anything in this state.” She frowned irritably.

“Look at how injured you are! It’s a miracle you’re as conscious as you are. By going out there, you might be putting us all at risk. Now stop being petulant and sit down, and just let yourself be injured. Seeing as you’re healthy enough to be considering foolish notions, I’ll consider you ‘not dying.” She looked at Kira. “Make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid for a moment.”

She then quickly trotted over to Kestrel. “Can I take a look at your wound, please?”

Kestrel caught the rifle tossed to him with ease, and in a flash of motion and clicking of metal the griffon had dropped the magazine to the ground and then fully disassembled the weapon. The parts falling to the ground with a clink as Kestrel tossed them aside.

"Listen to your mare Trails. There's no battle to win; just a slaughter to clean up and bodies to burn. I killed almost thirty of them, it did nothing to help."

With that he went silent until Zestari asked to see his wounds. The blood-soaked griffon nodded and removed his talons from his side, and turned about to better face the zebra mare.

While leaps and bounds ahead of Trails, Kestrel was still the image of war at the moment. Soaked in blood from head to talon, most of it being from others, with a rather nasty looking shotgun wound along his left side. The bleeding had slowed a bit, but was still going, making a small pool at Kestrels feet.

He seemed unfazed by that fact, and the fact that the blood of an entire squad was currently drying out over the rest of him.

Kira had moved in front of the door when Trails got up, Zestari and Kestrel was right there was no use to get out there again to just get wounded or killed or at least that was her way of seeing it. She gave Zestari a nod as she looked to Trails she would watch him while she took care of Kes.

"They are right you know." She said to Trails. "There is nothing left for you out there but your death."

“His mare?” she raised an eyebrow at Kestrel, but said nothing more, before starting to look at his wounds. Although Zestari would never admit it, the amount of blood Kestrel seemed to be doused in made her uneasy. She wiped away the worst of it from the shotgun wound that he had been holding, and dabbed some herbs that would act to deaden the pain slightly. Then she rather hastily stitched the worst of the wound. Apologising repeatedly to Kestrel each time she had to make a stitch as she imagined the pain would be bad.

Finishing, she pulled another small tuft of a thin bladed grass from her saddlebag and passed it to Kestrel. “It will help you keep some wits about you following your blood loss, if you start to feel woozy or disoriented, spit it out.”

She turned back to Happy and checked his pupil dilation. “How’re you feeling? Think you could walk to…” she looked at Kick Start, “Red Rock?”

"I can take back this camp, no need to fall back." Trails coughed, the stubborn stallion refusing to admit he was one step away from dying. "This fight aint over yet. I'm not leaving everypony in their do die at the hooves of tyrants. There's not just soldiers like me and Start in there, there's foals, dams, the elderly. That's an entire town of non combatants that are all about to be massacred if we don't stop them." Trails rose shakily, steeling himself. "I'm not gonna leave them to it."

Kestrel snapped up the piece of grass with a grunt and a nod, already chewing it. The stitches hadn't hurt enough to earn a reaction from Kestrel externally. Just a blink and and stare, as per usual. No doubt he'd have another small scar to show what had happened, another stitch on the tapestry.

"The slaughter is already done Trails, I spent the last half hour watching it through a rifle scope." Kestrel started looking at his friend with a cold sort of glare. "There is no saving it. You try that and you go get yourself killed, and be of no use to anyone but the buzzards. Or you can obey your new boss here and live to fight another day."

“Foals, dams and Elderly?” Zestari laughed nervously, “I doubt the NLR would hurt them, after all they’re civilised, a force for good out here - aren’t they?” She nodded to herself. “No idea why they’re attacking. Revenge for the deal yesterday, perhaps?” She shrugged. This wasn’t the time for idle conversation.

“Anyway, you’re in no condition to fight anypony. The only fighting you’ll be doing until we get to Red Rock will be against yourself wanting to rest and sleep.” She gave Happy a nudge to emphasise her point. “Any more of these silly notions and I won’t give you any painkillers.”

“Now, if you would, Kick Stand, please lead on towards Red Rock.”

Kick Start laughed darkly at Zestari's comment. "Force for good? Well if imperialism is good then shit yes, they're regular fucking Colt Scouts. Trails is right, there's dozens of innocent ponies who've died and dozens more who are going to. But we can't change that, unless my dad's managed to keep the backway clear only lucky bucks like us are walking away."

"Sounds to me like we've got a job to do then." Trails said, trying and failing to get back to his hooves.

"Shut it with the false macho bullshit, Trails. You're only a hair away from dying, your friends aren't trained soldiers, and I'm more likely than not the highest ranking Khan left standing. We're going to Red Rock so that we can regroup and have a chance in hell at getting retribution."

Kestrel resisted the urge to say something about the soilder quip, but the cocky Khan had a point. Aside from Kes and Trails no one in the group was particularly skilled in the martial arts of battle. Kira had her explosives but they'd only carry her so far...and after the Battle of Stableton there was no telling what her mental state was.

Last thing the group needed was an explosives chucking griffoness going haywire and lobbing grenades at the wrong team.

Checking his wounds and his rifle Kestrel nodded to the exit.

    "You lead Khan, I'll follow."

Trails didn't answer for a long time. The stallion was clearly on deaths door, even he could see that. The smart thing, the wise thing, to do was run. Living to fight another day was just spin, a lie you'd tell yourself so you could sleep. He wasn't the kind for comforting lies. Nor was he the kind to leave somepony behind, even if it was the smart thing.

After a few still minutes he answered by hefting his repeater, finally clearing the jam, and staggering out the door. For a second it looked like Kick Start was going to let the hard headed buck walk off to his own sunset. But the soft burp of a dart gone gave voice to the Senior Kahn's true intent. Trails' body went rigid as the dart slammed into his shoulder. He seemed to try and mouth something to Start, 'fuck you' probably, before he fell to the sand.

"Discussion over." Start said as holstered the dart gun. "Alright, Red Rock's a long way away, we should start moving now if we wanna get there before dark."

Kestrel shook his head at the closest thing to a friend he had. That attitude of his was going to finish him off one day, and Kestrel felt that it would be sooner rather than later at this rate. That in mind Kestrel walked over and picked the buck up and put him on his back without a word.

He'd follow the khan's lead without comment or question for now.

Zestari made a noise of surprised outrage as Happy slumped upon the sand.

“What the hay was that?” she demanded angrily of Kick Start. “He’s lost a lot of blood so you think drugging him up with a powerful sedative is a good idea?!” She stepped towards Kick Stand, intent on giving the stallion a flick across his ears. “Such a foolish attempt to quiet him down might just kill him. Did you think about that before you shot him?” She stomped angrily.

“He was delirious and an idiot. Not a threat.” She turned to assist the sedated stallion, but noticed Kestrel had already dealt with it. And she watched as he hoisted Happy onto his back.

“Thank you Kestrel, I’m not sure that carrying Happy whilst you have an injury of your own is wise, but considering the circumstances…” she rolled her eyes. “If you believe his breathing or heart to stop, tell me as soon as you can.”

With that, she followed Kestrel, making sure to shoot angry glances at Kick Stand whenever he glanced towards her.

Post by Sub Warden Sun Nov 25, 2012 5:10 am

While Trails was being his hard headed self in the hideout the Khans were letting out a collective death rattle. The sound was music to Cuss' aged ears. The fuckers that had dogged the NLR from the day they arrived in the Mohoofe lie at his hooves now, dead or dying it didn't matter, they'd been crushed no ifs about it. He smiled cruelly and lit a smoke while trotting over to his son.

The pair had taken an uncharacteristically hooves off approach to the attack. Neither wanted to be responsible for something slipping through the cracks, or to be more accurate somepony. The risk of a Khan regroup was something they'd all considered, and it was generally agreed that a reformed Great Khans with their 'Papa' wasn't a threat they wanted to tackle. A threat that could be better prevented from mass organization, and fighting in the trenches, as much as both stallions wanted to do it, wasn't conducive to that end.

“We've done it kiddo.” Cuss patted his colt on the back and smiled at the sight of the burning encampment.

“Sure did,” Pot mumbled, the younger buck looking much more distracted than his father, “once cleanup's done what're we doing, going back to McMaren?”

“I suspect Shoe and Date Tree are gonna both want a debreif soon as we get back, sooner the better. I can't speak for higher up will want, but that's for later. We're taking some well earned leave, your mother's been bugging me for news about you ever since you got posted here.”

“Ugh.” Pot moaned. “Mom's never gonna stop is she?”

“She's your mother, what do you think?”

    “Point ta-”

“Shadowhooves one to Whiskey Seven.” the radio cut over Cuss' emergency band.

    “What is it?”

“We've got movement down the back canyon, like we figured.”

    “Then what's the hang up?”

“Well it's the tangos, somethings not right.”

“You're not paid to think soldier, fire till you run out of targets or ammo. Understood?”

The radio was quiet for an eerily long time before the voice quietly answered, “Roger.”

Rake jumped over a collapsed yurt and sprayed his carbine at the latest pair of NLR troopers to show their ugly muzzles. This whole day had been a shit storm and a half, leaving more good ponies dead than he'd ever cared to see. What rested worst with him wasn't the loss, it was the responsibility. He knew full well this was nothing but retaliation in the highest degree for their drug dealing and attacks. Retaliation for attacks he'd too long tolerated. If he and any remnant of the Great Khans survived past today it was time for a change, for them to finally listen to reason. They had needed a wake up call and dear Luna did it come.

Moonshine skulked around the edges of the camp for a long time, doing his best to stay away from the fighting. He was just a chem cook after all, not some super soldier. Papa had given him a job to do, an impossible job, but he knew why it had to be done. He'd never been fond of Rake, nopony at the table was, other than+++ Betts for some reason. The stallion had a nasty holier-than-thou streak left over from his bitch sister. That whole fucking family had the habit of raising shit over the dumbest things. Life would be simpler with him dead.

At least that's what the scrawny chem cook told himself as he passively hunted the VP. In his heart he was terrified of the stallion, who he'd seen routinely kill ponies much stronger than himself as if it was foal's play. Truth was Rake was a warrior, somepony with strength that presented a real threat to Papa Khan. Shine was just a weak pawn in the game of giants, and he was being sent to capture the knight fast turning white. When he finally did find his prey he felt more scared and cornered rat than predator.

He fumbled with the pistol, nearly dropping it as he pulled it out of the holster. Rake shot at a couple of NLR troopers, the sound made Shine jump, convinced the shots were directed at him. He took a second to make sure of his aim, shaking so badly that it was more of a hope than a carefully drawn bead. He fired with a jerk of his tongue, seizing up in terror as the gun went off.

Rake froze as he felt the old familiar pain of a slug tearing through him. How? Was hi first thought, oddly enough. He'd been so careful to keep himself covered, knowing full well the NLR were going to surround them after flooding the canyon. He'd been deliberately walking to the caves in the back, being sure not to broadcast his destination. Still here he was, wounded by some sniper. He spun around, no scope flares. He looked lower....Shine with a smoking gun.

    “You little...”

Shine panicked, how in the name of Clestia's glory did that asshole survive. Rake started speaking, no doubt promises to end the small stallion who'd shot him. Near hyperventilating, Shine fired wildly at the big Stallion. The gun clicked dry and still the VP slowly trotted forward. His chest was a tapestry of bleeding wounds now, half a dozen rounds having found their mark.

The old war pony struggled to breathe as he staggered after his murderer. He'd known this day would come, known that his hackle raising would eventually get him killed killed by one of 'Papa's' little lapdogs. He'd thought he'd had more time though, at least until he'd gotten to see his son really become a man. It wasn't rage that filled Rake's dying heart as he died, it was regret. Perhaps that was his punishment for all his failures as a Stallion, to die full of regret.

The trek to Red Rock seemed unending, Kick Start insisting on taking the least direct route possible. The sun was rising on a new day by the time the party arrived, a small cluster of refugees sat in the canyon. Start trotted ahead to chat up one of the more senior looking survivors, the rest looking up at the stallion with bloodshot eyes. A few whispered to each other, their voices cracking after being run hoarse with tears. After a hushed conversation Start turned and addressed Trails' group.

"This is all that's left." He swallowed and shook his head. "Maybe 30 ponies out of 200. I...I need to take care of my people, they need me. Thank you though, thank all of you. You're friends of the Khans, I'll make sure nopony forgets that here. If you could do me just one favor though..." The stallion looked to the haggard group of ponies that was his family. "We need time to lick our wounds, if you could just stay a little longer, I'd be in your debt."

For a short bit Kestrel pondered the question asked of him. Stay or go, which should he do? Which WOULD he do? The answer didn't take long to come up with. Trails, while still nowhere near what most would classify as a friend to Kes, he'd stuck with the buck through all of what had happened thus far.

No point in stopping now, Trails needed time to recover anyway. Staying here, in this canyon of Khans, would provide the time needed no doubt.

    "I'll stay. For now."

Post by Zestari Mon Nov 26, 2012 8:58 am

When Zestari and the others finally caught up to other group of Khan’s she could barely hold back a relieved sigh. It had been one very long and tiring couple of days and her protesting muscles had reminded her of the fact for the last couple of hours of travel.

When Kick Start stepped ahead to talked the cluster of other ponies, Zestari shrugged her saddlebags off and slumped onto the ground, happy just to have a break. She knew she should take the opportunity to check on Happy and his condition, or check Kestrel’s wound hadn’t reopened, or that it wasn’t infected, but she needed the opportunity to rest first.

Zesty shut her eyes and rested her head upon her forelegs for the few minutes Kick Start was gone talking to the other group, before lifting her head again when she heard the soft thudding of his hooves coming back towards them.

“Of course, we’ll stay as long as there are ponies that need help and care.” She stood up wearily. “Do any of you require medical assistance?” She asked, making her way towards the group.

Sins of the Mother - Page 12 Empty Re: Sins of the Mother

Post by Happy Trails Tue Nov 27, 2012 6:31 am

An intense seething pain slowly clawed its way to Trails' brain. As the fire in his veins spread he was forcibly ripped back to life. For the third time in as many days he found himself desperately fighting his way back from the brink of death, choosing the agony of life over the comfortable numbness he'd been given a taste of. Even though as the light of the morning sun bit at his eyes he wanted to scream out, let some of the hellfire escape, he kept quiet.

As everything gradually came back to him along with his ability to move the stallion let out a sigh and got to his hooves. He knew in his heart that he'd done everything he could, that if he'd kept fighting the only thing waiting for him was a shallow grave, if even that. Still he wished nothing more than that he'd done more, saved more than this sad cluster of ponies in front of him. It was when he saw the familiar striped coat of Zestari that his self deprecation ended. Old, long forgotten, advice rung in his ears as he painfully made his way to her. "You'll fail at least a thousand times before you're as old as me kid, just remember not to let them spoil the time you could have because your upset over the time you 'should' be having."

"Hey Zestari," He coughed more than spoke, his throat dry. "want to take a walk?"

Zestari was busy helping to resplint a broken limb on a buck that looked aged beyond his years, even though she guessed he was probably no older than she was. The recent desperation of survival had aged him terribly. It had probably aged all of them.

Giving him a few of her preciously dwindling herbs to chew on, she told him to rest as much as he could, and that the herbs would help bring that needed rest.

Putting her things back into her saddlebags, a familiar and oh-so-wanted voice spoke from behind her.

"Hey Zestari, want to take a walk?"

She turned her head and smiled warmly at Happy, pleased that he seemed to be back on his hooves and moving around.

Putting the last objects into her bags and tightening the clasps she stood up and nodded at the brown stallion. “Certainly,” she gestured with her hooves, “lead the way.”

Sins of the Mother - Page 12 Empty Re: Sins of the Mother

Trails smiled weakly, doing his best to hide the wince that came with every other step. This hadn't been the first time he and a grenade had words, though last time he'd had much better armor and enough hydra in his system to kill a small hell hound. It was only after a few minutes of silent trotting he realized he had no idea where he was, let alone where he was going. Still, the canyon seemed to have a natural flow to it, one that he could follow.

"Makes you think," he said finally as they got closer to the boxed-in end of the canyon, "the whole massacre. In my heart I know that the NLR feels justified, thinks we're a bunch of raiders. But look at that," Trails pointed at the distant small group of refugees, "that's not a group of blood thirsty bandits. What do you think? I know you lot've been trying to piece out the gray area, and well, I want to know what you've come to especially."

Sins of the Mother - Page 12 Empty Re: Sins of the Mother

As Zestari followed Happy, she kept a nervous eye on the stallion, she knew that he hadn’t fully recovered from his injuries yet, and she was concerned that this short walk wouldn’t do him any favours. The last thing they needed was his wounds to reopen and get infected.

She ran a tired hoof through her mane. “Honestly Happy, I don’t know what to think.” She gave a weak smile. “I guess it’s possible that they’re good ponies who make perpetually bad decisions. But they’re still grey. Making chems? Trading with nasty ponies, uh… what were they called… Fiends? Hay, even their stupid initiation ceremony, I don’t see the value in having the hay beaten out of you to join.”

She turned and peered in the direction of the small huddling group. “But… They seem to care about one another, protect one another other, and treat the old and young properly, which is good to see. They seem to be trustworthy as a group, perhaps just mislead with their activities.”

“I guess if they had the right leadership and went onto the right path, they’d be a perfectly fine group of ponies. Certainly they seem to be organised well and are happy to work towards a common goal.” She shrugged and looked over to Happy, trying to gauge his opinion. She was somewhat nervous that he wouldn’t like what she was saying, and she didn’t want that, as she kind of really liked Happy.

“What happened this past short while is a tragedy Happy, but surely this was one that could have been avoided? And perhaps that’s the saddest part.”

There were a few moments of silence, punctuated only by a soft breeze whistling its way up the canyon. She gave him a soft nudge, “What was it that you see that made you want to wear that jacket so badly?”

Sins of the Mother - Page 12 Empty Re: Sins of the Mother

Trails stayed silent the whole time Zestari spoke and a long time still after. He agreed they were in the gray, but then, so had he his entire life. His long ignored conscience decided now was the time to play the slideshow of his misdeeds. Well, the greatest hits of it, time being short.

The first mental snapshot: casually walking away as the once happy town he'd traded with all these years was ravaged by slavers. Then the memory of his own trembling hooves as he struggled to get the dose of hydra in his veins. And finally, a filly cried as he beat her father to death, revenge finally gained. When he finished with his 'justice' he had turned to the foal, telling himself not to leave any orphans as he drew his pistol. He shook himself, burying his sins back into their hole and building a house on top of the whole, then moving into it.

No, he wasn't some paragon of the wasteland. He wouldn't judge the Khans for how they made their living, be it drug dealing or borderline raiding. He was in no position to. Still her final question did weigh on him, it wasn't just his mother's legacy after all. He reluctantly allowed himself another moment of honesty and turned to the mare, choosing his words carefully.

"A family...they're a family. I have one back east, but I'm not the pony I was before I left them when I was 14." He paused again trying to find just how to explain how little he was still their son and brother. "When I came back, took up caravaning again, it was clear as day that it was wrong, for all of us. I felt isolated and alone while walking right next to what were supposed to be the only ponies in the wasteland that really knew me. The Khans, they're more of what I've been searching for. This canyon, more of a home." He looked to the zebra hoping dearly that she wouldn't think his whole spiel stupid or judge him harshly for it. "Do you understand?"
