Mafia Sign Up [Forum Game] [Not an RP] Empty Mafia Sign Up [Forum Game] [Not an RP]

Post by Ashen Coat Fri Sep 28, 2012 11:08 pm

So how many you heard of a little game called Mafia? Some of you may have played it in the past. It’s a forum game (Not an RP), although it is sometimes played in real life albeit in a different manner, where there are two groups of players, one Mafia, and one Civilians. The Mafia are trying to kill all the civilians, while a Detective tries to figure out pick out the Mafia from the Civilians so they can be lynched by the town. The winner is the last group standing. That’s the gist of it.

Now, you may be wondering what the point of that bit above is. Well, I remember having a lot of fun playing this game on a site I used to play on years ago, so I thought we might have fun playing at too!

To let you guys know exactly what you’re getting into, let me go over the rules in a more detailed manner.

    The Rules

The game will have two teams, The Mafia and The Civilians. The Mafia’s end-goal is to kill all the Civilians, while the Civilians’ end-goal is to kill all the Mafia. There’s also a third side, but we’ll get to that later.

The game will be played in a cycle of three events, which will repeat until one side is declared a winner. A new event will occur every day, at roughly 6 PM Central Time. The events will be explained more below.

After sign-ups are closed, each player will be put on a list and given a random role. They will then be given a PM explaining their role and what they are expected to do. After that the list will go up and the game will start. Note that besides the Detective and Bodyguard roles, explained below, the roles of all the other players are hidden until they are investigated by the Detective. You won’t know who’s Mafia and who’s a Civilian. (Unless you’re Mafia of course, then you will know who your comrades are.)

Once the game begins, a thread will be created where all the Story Events will be posted. After that point, all discussion about the game, going over clues and such, should be taken to the Chatroom, not in this thread (Which will be locked once the game starts), or in the Story Event thread. A Skype Room will also be created for the Mafia, and if you don’t have a Skype and aren’t willing to get one for the game, you should PM me before roles are handed out.

    The Roles

There are a total of 5 roles in the game, some unique, others not. Here is a list of all the roles you can expect to find in the game.

CIVILIANS (Couldn’t think of a clever quote, sorry!)
Civilians are the primary role in the game, the one you’re most likely to be given. They take up a bit less than 3/4s of the players. The Civilians job is to help the Detective figure out who’s Mafia by looking for clues, explained below, while also trying not to die by the Mafia’s hooves. They are also given the task of lynching a player every round on suspicion of being a member of the Mafia. Whether or not there are any confirmed members of the Mafia to lynch when this happens is irrelevant.

MAFIA “I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.” -Don Corleone
The bad guys, the antagonists of the story. Their job, and primary goal, is to eliminate all the Civilians and take over the town. To do this, every round they kill a single civilian, and can also participate in the lynching to convince the Civilians to off one of their own. They take up 1/4 of the player base, and are thus outnumbered. They have to use their wit and skill to turn the Civilians against one enough and throw The Detective off their trail.

THE DETECTIVE “Elementary, my dear Watson.” -Sherlock Holmes
The guy with the deerstalker. This is the stallion (or mare) tasked with bringing the Mafia to their knees, to track them down and make sure they’re eliminated for the safety of the town. To do this, every round he/she can investigate a single player to find out their status, if they’re Mafia, Civilian, or something else. To track his or her targets down, the Detective has to look for clues, to find the identity of the Mafia. Clues will be explained more in the section below. When the Detective investigates someone, he will also be expected to write the story post detailing the investigation, after the results are given to him. (Note the Detective is invincible and can not be killed)

THE BODYGUARD “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” -Gandalf the Grey
The Bodyguard is a good samaritan who’s interested in protecting the ponies of the town from the Mafia. To achieve this end, the Bodyguard can protect a single player every round from the Mafia, ensuring they can not be killed. If the Bodyguard is guarding the player who the Mafia choose to kill, not only will that player be saved, but his Civilian status will be revealed. Not only that, but one of the Mafia will also be outed and revealed to the public. The Bodyguard has to be clever and determine who is at the biggest risk, either because they’re very vocal or because they’re finding a lot of clues. (Note the Bodyguard is invincible and can not be killed)

THE PSYCHO “Some men, aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men, just want to watch the world burn.” -Alfred
The Psycho is allied with neither of the big groups, he’s a free agent, dedicated to one task, killing everyone. Once a round he can murder a player much like the Mafia, and can also participate in the Lynching. The Psycho is dangerous, and attempted to lynch him could result in casualties. The same can be said for any Mafia trying to kill him as well.

    The Events

As stated before, there is a series of three events that make of the majority of this game, with one event taking place everyday at around 6 PM Central Time. Here are the details of each event and what happens on them.

    The Whacking
This is the day The Mafia and The Psycho kill their targets. When this happens, clues will be left behind leading to the identities of a Mafioso and The Psycho. The Bodyguard is also active during this day, and may protect one player from the Mafia and the Psycho.

    The Investigation
The Detective investigates a player, following the trail of clues left by the Mafia and Psycho. The player he investigates will have their role revealed, whether it’s Civilian, Mafioso, or Psycho.

    The Lynching
The entire playerbase votes for a single person to be killed, hopefully a Mafioso or the Psycho. The Civilians make up a majority of the voting, and thus have the strongest voice, but they can be turned by the Mafia towards one of their own, especially if there are no confirmed Mafia to target.

Once the Lynching is done, the next day is another whacking, and the cycle will continue until one side remains standing. Note that the very first story post will be considered a Whacking.

    Clues

During every murder scene, Mafia or Psycho, one or several clues will be placed in the story post pointing towards a single Mafioso or Psycho respectfully. Clues will be based on what’s on a player’s character sheet, and so the Detective should look there to confirm what he finds in the story posts.

A clue could be anything related to a killer, whether it’s something they say, something they take notice of, or something they have. For example, “The mafioso took a moment to glance at the set of bells hanging from the wall, chuckling to herself before continuing.” could be a clue pointing towards, say, Winter Bell. This, however, “The Mafia walked into the shop, not even glancing at the various knick-knacks on the wall, including a tacky set of bells.” would not be, as it doesn’t directly relate to a mafioso. Also note that the Winter Bell one was an easy example, the actual clues won’t be so obvious or easy to find.

Anyway, that’s the rules of the game. If anyone’s interested in playing, simply send me a PM and I’ll add you to the list. Note that I’m only running with 16 players right now, and it will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
