    Personality
    Merle likes trying to find that one best way to do something, which sometimes leads him to overthink the situation. This also applies to his speech; he tends to talk carefully, trying to get his point across effectively, but diplomatically. While he is not adverse to conversation, Merle tends not to initiate it unless he actually does want to discuss something. Likewise, while he is not above either asking for or accepting help (and actually enjoys friendly company), if there is any chance of success while solo, he will likely try by himself first—not for any sort of glory, but just because it's an interesting challenge.

    Growing up in the stable has not quite prepared him for the reality of the wasteland. While a tendancy to see the best in people may help long-term relations in a tight environment, it is a great way to get shot or worse after passing through the door. Luckily, the year Merle has spent outside has tempered that somewhat; he may still believe you have the best of intentions at heart, but he will take precautions just in case.

    History
    Stable life isn't particularly exciting. You see the same walls every day on your way to the same class or the same job, usually with the same schedule. Merle was slightly more lucky in that regard; after beginning his apprenticeship under the stable maintenance crew—who were quite happy to have his claws and wings—his days revolved around whatever happened to be broken. (Sure, the description said routine maintenance, but how often do you get time for that after two hundred years of heavy use?) This often got him into the inner workings of the stable, though jobs in the tighter crawlways were usually given to smaller ponies. Unfortunately, the close work required to patch wires or find that blockage preventing the sprinklers over the apple orchard from extending strained his already poor—for a griffon—vision, and barely a year after starting to work he asked the medical staff for glasses, without luck. After all, you can still read that chart better that I can, and where in the stable do you need to see far enough for them to have an effect?

    When the gates of Tartarus opened, Merle was able to use the passages to escape some notice on his way to the door. However, somewhere between blocking particularly vicious bats when he wasn't able to fit and using it as a club to make those ponies get off that poor dog, he managed to break his Pipbuck. Trying to get through the Wasteland without that warning system—coupled with being rather unfamiliar with just how hostile ponies could be—proved to be a bit difficult. When he found the young town of Stableton, Merle was more than happy to settle down again; he returned to his job of fixing what broke and began trying to get some food growing. He's had rather limited success so far, and now this wide sky is calling to his wings again.
